This course explores the intersection of speech-language pathology and palliative care through real-world case discussions. Participants will compare hospice and palliative roles, examine communication in PEG and goals-of-care decisions, and learn collaborative strategies for supporting patients with serious illness.

Learner Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

1. Compare and contrast the roles of palliative care and hospice in patients with serious illness.
2. Describe how serious illness communication can help with decision making involving PEG placement, and goals of care.
3. Illustrate how Speech-Language Pathologists and Palliative Care providers can collaborate on complex cases.

Speaker Bios:

Claudia Chou, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Neurology and a Palliative Care Consultant in the Division of Community Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care (CIMGP) at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She completed her residency in Neurology and fellowship in Movement Disorders at Mayo Clinic and a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) at the Ohio State University. Currently, she serves as program director for the HPM fellowship at Mayo in Rochester. Her interests are developing models of palliative care delivery in neurology and education about palliative care for patients with neurologic disease.

Kiersten Pope is a Speech-Language Pathologist working in both the inpatient and outpatient practices at Saint Mary’s Hospital at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Kiersten completed her Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology at Utah State University in 2019, after which she was accepted into the Clinical Fellowship program at Mayo Clinic, where she continues as full-time allied health staff. She enjoys helping adults with neurologic diseases navigate communication and cognitive challenges.

Catherine A. Shonley, MA, CCC-SLP, is an Allied Health Speech-Language Pathologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She earned her BA in communication sciences and disorders from Northwestern University in 2008, followed by her MA in speech-language-hearing sciences from the University of Minnesota in 2010. She was then fortunate enough to return to her hometown to complete her clinical fellowship at Mayo Clinic and has enjoyed the varied patient population and invaluable mentorship of her colleagues there ever since. She works primarily with adults in the inpatient and outpatient settings with a focus on assessing and treating dysphagia arising from neurologic injury and illness, head and neck cancer, and other etiologies.
