Description:

This course will provide an overview of the existing evidence base for speech-language pathology intervention in primary progressive aphasia and will discuss psychosocial factors that are often experienced by persons with PPA and their care partners.  We will also discuss the speech-language pathologists' role in using counseling approaches to thoughtfully provide person-centered care that not only addresses communication, but also psychosocial well-being.

Learner Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  1. Summarize psychosocial features and implications for individuals with primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and their care partners.
  2. Describe the counseling role of speech-language pathologists in partnering with persons with PPA and their families.
  3. Discuss evidence-based counseling approaches in PPA.

Speaker Bios:

Maya Henry, PhD, is an Associate Professor jointly appointed in the Departments of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and Neurology at the University of Texas, Austin.  Director of the Aphasia Research and Treatment Lab, her research investigates the immediate and long-term benefits of interventions to promote communication and quality of life in primary progressive aphasia.

Dr. Kristin Schaffer is a speech-language pathologist and Assistant Professor at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences.  Her research interests include examining and addressing psychosocial factors in primary progressive aphasia/aphasia through patient-centered and care partner-inclusive treatment paradigms.  Prior to transitioning into academia, Dr. Schaffer worked in several clinical settings, including home health, inpatient rehabilitation, and private practice.
