Description:

Right hemisphere brain damage results in a variety of communication disorders characterized by difficulties manipulating and processing language within communicative contexts.  These deficits are captured under the label Apragmatism and have a significant negative impact on social engagement.  Discourse production and comprehension deficits including aprosodia will be discussed along with contributions from aspects of social cognition such as theory of mind.

Learner outcomes:

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Define apragmatism.
  • Describe potential impacts of apragmatism on social and vocational outcomes.
  • Explain the relationship between apragmatism and cognitive deficits.

Speaker Bio:

Margaret Lehman Blake is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Houston.  Her research focuses on cognitive-communication disorders associated with right hemisphere brain damage to understand the underlying deficits and to develop treatments.  She is the author of The Right Hemisphere and Disorders of Cognition and Communication and the co-creator of RightHemisphere.org, a website designed to provide education and resources to patients, families, and clinicians.
