Description:

Research has shown that language performance deficits are key early indicators of mild cognitive impairment (MCI).  The focus of this session will be a review of reported deficits and guidelines for effective clinical assessment of this growing population of at-risk individuals.

Learner Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the need for early identification of MCI.
  2. Explain the evidence-based guidelines for diagnosing MCI.
  3. Identify relevant and effective assessment tools for MCI.
  4. Discuss the research indicating that subtle language performance deficits are an early marker of MCI.
  5. Identify factors to consider in interpreting test performance and counseling clients.

Speaker Bio:

Kim McCullough, PhD, CCC-SLP, is Graduate Program Director and Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at Appalachian State University.  She teaches courses in adult neurogenic communication disorders.  Her clinical activities and research interests include developing clinically efficient assessment and treatment protocols for individuals with cognitive impairments.

Financial Disclosures: Dr. McCullough receives a salary from Appalachian State University.  Dr. McCullough receives royalties from authorship of a textbook as well as from presentations.

Non-Financial Disclosures: Dr. McCullough is currently developing a treatment program for adults with cognitive-communication impairments with a publishing group.  The program will not be mentioned in the presentation, and no royalties have been received.
