President's Message:
Farewell and Transition

What a wonderful annual meeting we had in Denver in November! The topics were interesting and speakers were very engaging. Have we ever had an ANCDS luncheon in such a spectacular location?! The snowy Rocky Mountains on a sunny day are majestic. And what fun it was to surprise Anita Halper from the Rehab Institute of Chicago with the Honors of ANCDS!

Certification Board Committee

Heather Clark, from Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, met all three requirements for completing board certification, and became the ANCDS newest Board Certified member as of November 11, 2015. Congratulations Heather!  In addition, she has graciously agreed to join the Certification Board as our newest member. Her tenure with the committee begins immediately, ending December 31, 2018. The other committee members, with year of term completion are as follows:

Communications Committee

The members of the Communications Committee (Edie Babbitt, Michael Biel, Renee Fabus, Miriam Krause, Katy O'Brien, Yvonne Rogalski, and Meghan Savage) would like to send a warm welcome and thank you to our new volunteers who signed up after the ANCDS meeting in November. Heather Coles, Heather Jeng, Joel Krutt, Peter Meulenbroek, and Maggie Potter have joined the team. We're excited to have them on board.

Honors Committee

The Honors Committee for the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences (ANCDS) welcomes nominations of current members of ANCDS for the 2016 Honors of the Academy.

Nominees should be members who have shown outstanding contributions to research, teaching, treatment, and/or service in the area of neurologic communication disorders. Nominations are due April 30, 2016.

ANCDS Honors 2015 -
Anita Halper

At the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences (ANCDS), Anita Halper, M.A., CCC-SLP BC-ANCDS, was awarded the 2015 Honors of the Association for outstanding contributions in research, teaching, treatment and service in the area of neurologic communication disorders. This is the highest honor that the association can bestow on any of its members. Recently, Leora Cherney had an opportunity to chat with Anita about her long-standing career in speech and language pathology. We are pleased to share with the membership some of Anita's responses.

Education and
Standards Committee

One of the major roles of the Education and
Standards Committee is to
develop and implement the educational program for the Annual Scientific and Business Meeting. In completing this task for the 2015 meeting in Denver, the committee members (Isabel Hubbard, Diana Petroi, JoAnn Silkes, and myself) discussed several themes.

Professional Affairs &
Practice Guidelines

The coming year brings new resources to the Professional Affairs and Research Writing Committees. My term as chair concluded in 2015 and Laura Murray will now take the lead of the group. In addition, two committees have new chairs: Maya Henry will chair the Progressive Neurogenic Communication Disorders (formerly Dementia) Committee, and Deanna Britton will chair the Dysarthria Committee. Returning chairs are Kirrie Ballard (Apraxia of Speech); Therese ONeil-Pirozzi (TBI) and Mary Purdy (Aphasia). Two publications appeared in 2015 (Apraxia of Speech and TBI). Each committee has a project in the planning or implementation stages.

Membership Committee

The membership committee received 33 applications for the 2015 ANCDS Conference Student Fellowships. Ten fellowships were awarded: five to MS/MA students and five to doctoral students.  Fellows received a complimentary year of ANCDS membership, a complimentary year of SIG 2 membership, and complimentary registration to the 2015 ANCDS Scientific and Business Meeting and Luncheon in Denver, CO. Fellows were also provided an ANCDS mentor for the duration of the 2015 Scientific and Business and Luncheon.

Movie Review: Concussion

A crisis of our time: the tragic downfall of one of Americas most beloved warriors, the professional football player, is at the very heart of the new release Concussion by Peter Landesman.  Based on a true story, the film calls our societal values into question by asking whether our craving for the brutal, head-to-head sport obscures our ability to understand if there are potentially ravishing long-term effects of the game on the brains of its players.
