This lecture reviews the latest evidence and practice concerning the use of gesture in aphasia rehabilitation.  A theory of gesture-language-speech interaction will be reviewed before evidence concerning gesture production for total communication, gesture facilitation of word retrieval, and gesture assisted linguistic learning is discussed.

Learner outcomes:

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the interaction between gesture, language and speech processing from a cognitive linguistic modelling perspective.
  • Summarize and apply the evidence underpinning decisions to utilize in gesture as a modality in aphasia rehabilitation to their clinical caseload.


Professor Rose directs the National Health Medical Research Council funded Centre for Research Excellence in Aphasia Recovery and Rehabilitation in Australia.  She qualified as a speech language pathologist in 1981 and has worked, taught, and researched in the area of neurogenic communication disorders and particularly aphasia across the continuum of care, since that time.  Miranda is Principal Research Fellow and Professor at La Trobe University in Australia and leads a large scale nationally funded RCT, COMPARE, investigating the comparative effects of constraint induced aphasia therapy, multimodality aphasia therapy, and usual care in chronic post-stroke aphasia.  She was an investigator on the VERSE early aphasia intervention RCT and is currently an investigator on the ASK RCT of prevention of mood disorders in aphasia.  Miranda has achieved over $7M of competitive grant funds as Chief Investigator and more than 120 referred publications.
